About the Image Cropper

The Image Cropper gives you a draggable crop box over your image with eight resize handles, a rule-of-thirds grid, and a darkened area showing exactly what gets discarded. Unlike a resizer that scales the whole frame, cropping cuts pixels away, which is what you need when a subject sits off-center, when a photo has distracting edges, or when a landscape shot has to become a square profile picture without squashing anyone’s face.

Nine aspect ratio buttons lock the crop box to a fixed proportion as you drag: Free for unconstrained cropping, 1:1 for square avatars and Instagram posts, 4:3 and 3:4 for standard photo prints in both orientations, 16:9 and 9:16 for video thumbnails and vertical stories, 3:2 and 2:3 for DSLR-native proportions, and Custom for any ratio you type in. Rotate and flip controls sit alongside, letting you fix a sideways phone photo or mirror an image before you make the cut.

You can load up to 10 images into a queue and work through them one at a time, clicking any thumbnail to switch. Cropped images get a green marker in the queue, and the summary strip tracks how many are done alongside the total size change. A Crop All Same button applies your current crop box proportionally across every image in the queue, which works well for batches shot at the same framing and less well for mixed orientations.

Everything runs on the Canvas API in your browser with no upload step, and HEIC and HEIF files from iPhones are decoded automatically on the way in. If you need the whole frame at a different size rather than a portion of it, the Image Resizer handles that with fit, fill, and stretch modes across a batch.

Everyone on the BigToolSite tools team put this through portrait and landscape sources, checked that ratio locking holds when you drag a corner handle past the canvas edge, confirmed that rotation updates both the preview and the underlying pixel data before the crop is taken, and verified that transparent PNGs keep their alpha unless JPEG output is chosen.

Once your crop is final, output size is usually the next concern, and the Image Compressor takes a batch of finished images down in file size with per-file savings figures.

How to Use the Image Cropper

  • Drag up to 10 images onto the upload area or click to browse. Each file can be up to 10MB, in any format your browser displays, including HEIC.
  • The first image loads into the crop workspace with a crop box covering 80% of the frame, centered. The rest wait in the Image Queue below.
  • Pick an Aspect Ratio: Free, 1:1, 4:3, 3:4, 16:9, 9:16, 3:2, 2:3, or Custom. Choosing Custom reveals two number inputs where you type your own width and height ratio.
  • Drag inside the crop box to move it, or drag any of the eight handles to resize. The header shows live crop dimensions in the image’s real pixels, not screen pixels.
  • Use Rotate & Flip to turn the image 90° left or right, or mirror it horizontally or vertically. Each change redraws the canvas and resets the crop box.
  • Set the Format to JPEG, PNG, or WebP, and adjust the Quality slider between 10% and 100%. The default is 90%.
  • Click Apply Crop. The image is marked with a green bar in the queue and gains a Download button.
  • Click any queue thumbnail to switch images, or use Crop All Same to apply the current crop proportionally to every image in the queue.
  • Download individual results from the queue, or use Download All (ZIP) for the whole set. Filenames include the crop dimensions, for example photo-cropped-1080×1080.jpg.
  • Reset Crop returns the box to its default position, and Clear All empties the queue.

Example Usage

Goal: a square profile picture from a landscape photo

Input: portrait.jpg at 4032×3024

Steps: select the 1:1 ratio, drag the crop box over the face, resize with a corner handle until framing looks right, set Format to JPEG at 90%, click Apply Crop

Result: portrait-cropped-2400×2400.jpg, downloaded from the queue

For a YouTube thumbnail, choose 16:9 instead. The box locks to that proportion no matter which handle you drag, so you can position it freely without ever producing an off-ratio result that gets letterboxed on upload.

A phone photo that came out sideways needs the rotate step first. Click Rotate Right 90° to stand it upright, then set your ratio and crop. The rotation is baked into the pixel data before the crop is taken, so the downloaded file is correctly oriented rather than relying on an EXIF flag that some viewers ignore.

The Custom ratio is useful for less common targets. Enter 21 and 9 for an ultrawide banner, or 5 and 7 for a print size, and the crop box constrains itself to that proportion immediately.
