About the GIF Image Converter

This GIF Image Converter takes a GIF up to 10MB and re-encodes it as PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, ICO, or TIFF, entirely inside your browser. One thing to know before you start: conversion reads a single frame, so an animated GIF produces a still image of its first frame. If you need the animation preserved, this is not the right tool — but if you want a poster frame, a thumbnail, or a static version of a graphic that happens to be stored as GIF, it does exactly that.

GIF has two defining limits. It stores a maximum of 256 colors per frame, and its transparency is a single on-or-off flag rather than a graduated alpha channel. Both limits are baked into the source file, so no conversion can undo them — a GIF converted to PNG is still a 256-color image, just stored in a format that could hold far more.

That makes PNG the natural destination for most GIFs. It is lossless, it preserves the limited palette exactly, and it keeps the transparent regions transparent. Flat graphics, logos, diagrams, and pixel art all convert to PNG without losing a single pixel of fidelity.

JPG is the wrong choice for most GIF content and worth understanding why. JPG compression is designed for photographs with smooth gradients; applied to the hard edges and flat color blocks typical of GIFs, it introduces visible halos and can even produce a larger file than the original. It also cannot store transparency, so the converter fills those areas with white first. Choose JPG only when the GIF holds a photographic image.

WebP and AVIF handle both flat graphics and photographs well while keeping transparency, which makes them the better modern targets for web use. ICO turns a GIF into a favicon at any standard size, and TIFF covers print and archival needs.

How to Use the GIF Image Converter

  • Drop a GIF onto the upload panel or click to browse. Only .gif files up to 10MB are accepted; anything else returns a specific error message.
  • Review the file card showing the thumbnail, filename, file size, and dimensions. The thumbnail sits on a checkerboard, so transparency in your source is visible straight away.
  • Select an Output Format. JPG is preselected, but PNG is the better default for most GIF content — switch to it unless your GIF contains a photograph.
  • Adjust Quality for JPG, WebP, or AVIF output. The slider runs 1 to 100 and starts at 85; it stays hidden for PNG, ICO, and TIFF, which encode losslessly.
  • Choose a Resize mode: Original Size, 25%, 50%, 200%, or Custom Size. Custom opens width and height fields with Maintain aspect ratio ticked, so entering one calculates the other.
  • For ICO output, pick an ICO Size between 16 and 256 pixels. Icons are square, so this replaces the resize options entirely.

  • Compare the two preview panels carefully. The original panel plays any animation while the converted panel shows a single still — the clearest confirmation of what the conversion did.

Example Usage

Input: logo.gif, 400×400 with transparency. Format PNG.

Output: logo-converted.png with the transparent background intact and every pixel identical to the source. No quality slider appears, because PNG is lossless. This is the conversion to use whenever a GIF graphic needs to go into modern software or a design file.

Input: animation.gif, 640×480, 3.4 MB, 60 frames. Format PNG.

Output: animation-converted.png of frame one, perhaps 90 KB — a size change near −97%. That figure looks impressive but is not really a compression win; you discarded 59 frames. Read it as “this is now a still image”, not as a saving.

Input: photo.gif, 800×600, photographic content. Format WebP, Quality 82.

Output: photo-converted.webp, typically well under half the original size with better color depth than the GIF palette allowed. WebP is the right target when a photograph has been trapped in a 256-color format.
